About the work:
Sound Fort is created through the collective input of the student community at Melrose. It celebrates the coming together of each student's creativity in a symphony of sounds. This fort, as a shared space, is where each member of Melrose school can see their work alongside others and hear the soft, collective chiming of each person's handiwork.
About the Artist:
Daniel Shieh is an artist from Taiwan. He creates interactive artworks that alter the power dynamics between participants. He received an MDes in Art, Design, and the Public Domain at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is a current Artist in Resident at Stove Works.
Through manipulating perspective, sense of distance, and visibility, I construct physical environments where the power dynamics of being with another person is rewired. Often combining different levels of intimacy, such as standing at a distance from someone yet feeling your bodies merge, my work encourages different interpretations of another person’s humanity to occupy your mind simultaneously, offering a layered perception of the Other—as an individual who exists independent of you and as a being that mirrors your consciousness. Centering on the act of mutual perception, my work reaffirms our existence in each other’s minds.
In conjunction with his installation for the Outdoor Arts Experience Biennial, Shieh will be the Artist-in-Residence for the Melrose School in Jamestown for 2022.
