Spacing Out(side)
Outdoor art in Jamestown through October, 2021
Spacing Out(side) features the outdoor sculptures Vasanzio ‘Troy’ by Steve Buduo, Fear and Wonder of the Unknown by Sean Harrington, Lost to the Wind by Martin Keen and Spacing Out Together, a collaborative installation by the students at the Melrose School in Jamestown, RI and their art teacher Erica Connolly.
Steve Buduo is a sculptor based in Worcester, MA, who works in concrete and steel and has exhibited throughout the US and Europe. His abstract sculpture Vasanzio ‘Troy,’ measuring 6 ft high x 8 ft wide x 4 ft deep, was selected for the East Ferry location.
Sean Harrington is a sculptor and arts educator based in Greene, RI whose metal-work sculptures have been exhibited extensively across New England. His whimsical nine-part installation, Fear and Wonder of the Unknown, consisting of 8 ft tall segments spaced exactly 6 ft apart, will be installed along the bike path off Eldred Avenue.
Martin Keen is a sculptor and industrial designer who lives in Jamestown. His artwork Lost to the Wind is a site-specific piece for the Fisheries Campus of Fort Wetherill. Consisting of fiberglass poles topped with freely rotating geometrically shaped “flags,” the artwork will react and reflect the wind.
Under the direction of art instructor Erica Connolly, the 265 art students at the Melrose School (Pre-K through 4th grade) in Jamestown each drew an artwork proposal, then voted on one proposal to create together to represent the school. Conceived of by first grader Brooke Montoya, Spacing Out Together is installed at the bike path off Eldred Avenue.

Each of the temporary installations engages space in interesting or unusual ways, is original in its construction and use of materials, and offers an unexpected point of view. Spacing Out(side), coincides with a curated exhibition at the Jamestown Arts Center’s galleries called Spacing Out: Expanding the Field of Vision.
The four installations were selected from an applicant pool from a national request for proposals by a volunteer committee consisting of Jamestown residents, members of the art community, and representatives of the JAC. The project is co-chaired by Susan Matthews and Susan Hackman.
Spacing Out(side) is a follow up to last year’s Outdoor Arts Experience 2020 exhibition, which celebrated the JAC’s 10th Anniversary. Last year, the OAE placed 10 works at different sites around Jamestown.
